✈️ Why should you visit Sigiriya?

Seethawaka Botanical Garden is a recently established wet zone botanical garden in Sri Lanka, primarily dedicated to the research and conservation of threatened endemic plant species from the Sinharaja Rain Forest region.
  • Wet Zone Conservation Hub: It primarily functions as a vital research and conservation area for threatened and vulnerable endemic plant species specific to Sri Lanka’s wet lowlands, particularly from the Sinharaja Rain Forest region.
  • Newest Botanical Garden: Opened to the public in late October 2014, Seethawaka Botanical Garden holds the distinction of being the most recently constructed botanical garden in Sri Lanka.
  • Dual-Purpose Development: The garden skillfully blends conservation efforts with commercial promotion, actively improving export floriculture and promoting bamboo cultivation alongside its research initiatives.
  • Scenic Natural Integration: A beautiful stream flows through the garden, naturally sustaining diverse wet zone plants, while its proximity to the Indikada Mukalana Forest Reserve and various waterfalls enhances its ecological and scenic value.
  • Visitor-Friendly Amenities with Views: It offers a well-maintained lower garden with opportunities for boat rides, and a high platform providing grand panoramic views of the garden below and the surrounding mountainous landscape.

Guidelines

Visit During the Morning or Late Afternoon: The garden is most beautiful and comfortable during cooler hours (8 AM–10 AM or after 3 PM). Midday heat can be intense, especially for long walks. Wear Comfortable Shoes and Clothing: The garden spans a large area with hilly terrain and gravel paths. Wear walking shoes, a hat, and light clothing to stay comfortable. Do Not Pick or Damage Plants: This is a protected research garden with rare and endemic species. Picking flowers, damaging branches, or stepping off the path is strictly prohibited. Carry Water, but Avoid Plastic: Bring enough drinking water, especially if visiting with children or elderly.
