- Historical and Legendary Significance: The temple is believed to have been built over 2,000 years ago by King Kavan Tissa. It is said to be the legendary site where Princess Viharamahadevi, his future queen, washed ashore after being set adrift on a golden vessel to appease the gods.
- Blend of History and Nature: Situated near the coast in Pottuvil, the temple features ancient ruins of stupas and statues. This blends with the natural landscape and stunning views of the Indian Ocean, creating a serene and beautiful environment.
- Symbol of Historical Conflict: The temple’s land has been at the center of a long-standing land dispute. Its original 264 acres were reduced to just 3 acres due to encroachment, with recent efforts to reclaim land and rebuild the temple with the support of security forces.
- Architectural and Spiritual Value: The site contains important ancient ruins. These include stone statues of the Buddha and two statues of what are believed to be ancient kings or gods.
- Modern Developments: A new stupa has been built with the help of security forces. A new road along the coastline has also been constructed to provide access to the temple while avoiding the narrow, older access road that passes through a local village.
