- “Land of Lakes”: Wilpattu is known for its “willus,” which are natural, sand-rimmed water basins. Over 105 of these lakes are found throughout the park.
- Leopard Haven: The park has a significant leopard population. A 2018 survey found 133 individual leopards in the area.
- Vast and Ancient Park: Wilpattu is the largest and one of the oldest national parks in Sri Lanka. It covers an area of over 1,300 square kilometers.
- Rich Mammalian and Avian Diversity: It is home to over 30 species of mammals. Visitors can also spot a variety of wetland bird species here.
- Historical Significance: Wilpattu has historical importance. It is believed to be the site where Prince Vijaya first landed and founded the Sinhalese nation.
