Pothgul Viharaya – A beautiful and oldest legacy

✈️ Why should you visit Sigiriya?

Pothgul Viharaya is an ancient library and monastery complex located in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, known as the oldest such site in Sri Lanka.
  • Oldest Library Complex: Pothgul Viharaya is considered the oldest library and monastery complex in Sri Lanka. Its name literally translates to “bookstore,” highlighting its historical function.
  • Unique Architectural Plan: The complex features a square foundation with concentric terraces. In the center, there is a circular brick structure. This unique design is a hallmark of this site.
  • Connection to King Parakramabahu: The site was built by King Parakramabahu the Great. He is said to have listened to Jataka stories here. His consort, Queen Chandrawathie, later renovated it.
  • A Nearby Statue of Debate: A famous, enigmatic statue is located near the complex. While widely believed to be King Parakramabahu, some suggest it depicts a sage holding an ola leaf book. This connection links it to Pothgul Viharaya’s library function.
  • A Masterpiece of Buddhist Architecture: This “Gedige-type” structure is a masterpiece of its kind. Its design, with multiple terraces and brick stupas at the corners, is unique. Some believe it has a similar architectural style to buildings in Cambodia.
