✈️ Why should you visit Sigiriya?

Nissanka Latha Mandapaya is a unique, ancient pavilion in Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka, known for its elaborately carved stone pillars that resemble lotus stems with blossoming lotus buds on top.
  • Unique “Lotus Stem” Pillars: The most remarkable feature of this structure is its stone pillars. They are elaborately carved to resemble the curved, flowering stems of a lotus plant. The tops of the pillars are shaped like blooming lotus buds.
  • King’s Personal Listening Platform: It was built by King Nissanka Malla. A nearby stone inscription says he used the structure to listen to pirith, or the chanting of Buddhist scriptures. This makes it a royal and religious monument.
  • Strategically Located: The structure is located in the Dalada Maluva, the most sacred part of Polonnaruwa. It sits near the western entrance to this area, which once housed the Tooth Relic of the Buddha.
  • An Open-Air, Pillared Hall: As its name suggests, a mandapaya is an open, pillared hall. The Nissanka Latha Mandapaya is built on an elevated stone platform. This design offers a clear view of the surrounding sacred area.
  • Architectural Masterpiece: According to renowned archaeologist Senarath Paranavithana, the stone columns here are the best examples of this architectural style in all of Sri Lanka. This highlights the high level of craftsmanship of the Polonnaruwa period.
