Madirigiriya watadageya is a well-preserved ancient circular relic house and Buddhist structure in Sri Lanka, renowned for its intricate stone carvings and concentric rings of stone pillars.
  • Well-Preserved Vatadage: Medirigiriya Vatadage is one of the most well-preserved circular relic houses in Sri Lanka. It has a history that goes back to the pre-Christian era.
  • Architectural Masterpiece: The Vatadage is built on a rocky outcrop. It has three concentric rings of stone pillars. These pillars once held a roof over the stupa.
  • Historic Inscriptions: The site’s long history is proven by Brahmi characters on bricks and stone carvings. These characters predate carvings found at other Vatadages.
  • Unique Guardian Stones: The entrance features a large, carved stone frame. It also has detailed guard stones and a moonstone.
  • Restored After Abandonment: The site was abandoned for centuries after a foreign invasion. It was rediscovered in the late 1800s and later restored.
