The Samadhi Buddha Statue, located in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, is a famous and exquisitely carved statue of the Buddha in a deep meditative posture, symbolizing enlightenment and inner peace.
  • Symbol of Enlightenment: The statue depicts the Buddha in a state of deep meditation (dhyana mudra). It symbolizes the moment he attained enlightenment. The posture signifies concentration, balance, and tranquility.
  • Masterpiece of Anuradhapura Art: The statue, carved from a single block of dolomite marble, is considered one of the finest examples of sculptural art from the ancient Anuradhapura period (3rd-4th century CE).
  • Changing Expressions: A unique feature of the statue is its facial expression. It appears to change depending on the viewer’s angle. It can look slightly sad, subtly smiling, or completely serene.
  • Historical Significance: The statue was rediscovered in 1886. It was originally one of four statues placed around a sacred Bodhi tree shrine. Only this one remains largely intact.
  • Connection to a World Leader: India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, found great solace in this statue. He kept a picture of it with him while in prison, mentioning in his autobiography that it helped him overcome depression.
