- Final Mahaweli Project: Moragahakanda is the last major project of the Mahaweli scheme. It concludes a decades-long national development plan. The project aims to boost agriculture and power generation.
- Gravity Dam: This is a large gravity dam. It is a main component of the Moragahakanda-Kalu Ganga Project. The dam is built across the Amban River.
- Twin-Reservoir System: The project includes two separate dams and reservoirs. The Moragahakanda and Kalu Ganga reservoirs are linked by a tunnel. They work together for irrigation and power.
- Historical Significance: The original reservoir was first built by a king in 111 AD. Thus, the dam has ancient roots. This makes it part of Sri Lanka’s long hydraulic history.
- Named After a National Hero: The reservoir was officially renamed Kulasinghe Reservoir. This was done to honor Dr. A.N.S. Kulasinghe, a prominent civil engineer. It is a tribute to his contributions to the country.
