Batalagoda Tank is a historic reservoir in Sri Lanka, renowned for its serene beauty and ancient origins, serving as a tranquil spot for locals and tourists.
  • Sustainer of ‘Parana Nuwara’: The reservoir supplied water to an ancient city. This city, known as ‘Parana Nuwara’ (Old Capital), has a legacy lost to time.
  • Ancient Engineering Marvel: Tradition says the reservoir was built in pre-Christian times. Parker suggests it dates to the 2nd century BCE. This makes it an ancient hydraulic masterpiece.
  • Royal Connection:King Kumara Dhatusena is believed to have repaired or restored the reservoir. Queen Kalyanawathi also restored it in the 13th century. This shows its royal importance.
  • Historical Inscriptions: A 10th-century pillar inscription and a 13th-century slab inscription are found here. They contain records about the reservoir’s history and royal repairs.
  • Evidence of a Lost City: The area is called ‘Parana Nuwara’. Thus, it suggests the presence of an old, historically significant city that has not been well-documented..
