Sri Padaya (Adam’s Peak)- A Beautiful Pilgrimage of Faith and Nature

Sri Pada, also known as Adam’s Peak, is a revered pilgrimage site in Sri Lanka. Its distinctive conical shape draws thousands of pilgrims annually, representing various religious beliefs. The summit is adorned with a sacred footprint, believed by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and Christians to be of divine origin, fostering unity and spiritual reflection.

Significance: A holy mountain with a rock formation believed to be a footprint. It's a significant pilgrimage site for Buddhists (footprint of the Buddha), Hindus (footprint of Shiva or Hanuman), and some Muslims and Christians (footprint of Adam or St. Thomas). The mountain is also an important watershed and a part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Key Activities: The primary activity is the pilgrimage climb. At the summit, pilgrims visit the sacred footprint shrine to offer prayers and offerings. A common ritual is to ring the bell at the summit, once for each successful climb. Many also take part in a cleansing ritual in the Seetha Gangula stream.

Participants: Devotees from multiple religions, Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and Christians as well as tourists and hikers.

Estimated Attendance: Up to 20,000 people

Unique Traditions: Pilgrims wear white clothing. They offer support to one another by shouting "Karunawai" ("May you have the blessing of merit") as they climb. First-time climbers may carry small bundles of firewood to heat other pilgrims, a tradition based on the principle of self-donation. A triangular shadow of the peak is cast onto the surrounding plains at sunrise, a phenomenon of great religious significance to pilgrims.

Other Notes: The mountain is located in a tropical rainforest, part of the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The paths are well-lit with electricity during the season. There are many steps, with the final stretch being very steep. It is a strict rule to refrain from littering and to avoid consuming alcohol and cigarettes on the mountain.
