Significance: Sinhala and Tamil New Year, known as Aluth Avurudda and Puthandu, is one of Sri Lanka's most important cultural festivals. It marks the sun's astrological movement from the House of Pisces to the House of Aries, signifying the end of the harvest season and the beginning of a new year. It's a time for renewal, strengthening family and community bonds, and expressing gratitude

Key Activities: Preparing the House: Homes are cleaned and painted, and new clothes are purchased. Boiling Milk: At the auspicious time, a new clay pot is placed on the hearth and milk is boiled until it spills over, symbolizing prosperity. First Meal: Families gather to share the first meal of the new year, which includes Kiribath (milk rice) and traditional sweetmeats. Ganu Denu: A symbolic financial transaction where elders give money to younger family members to promote unity and generosity. Anointing Oil: The eldest member of the family or a village elder applies a special herbal oil to the heads of family members to bless them with good health. Games: Traditional games like Kotta Pora (pillow fighting), Lissana Gaha (greasy pole climbing), and Kamba Adeema (tug of war) are played in communities.
