Significance: Commemorates the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BC, a pivotal event that shaped the country's culture, society, and civilization. It is considered the second most important Buddhist festival in Sri Lanka after Vesak.

Key Activities: Poson activities include pilgrimages to sacred sites, particularly Mihintale and Anuradhapura, the historical centers of the event. Other activities are observing Sil (precepts) at temples, listening to Dhamma sermons, offering flowers and incense, and organizing pandols (illuminated storyboards) and dansals (free food and drink stalls).

Participants: The event is primarily observed by Sri Lankan Buddhists.

Estimated Attendance: An estimated 1.5 million devotees are expected to visit the Anuradhapura and Mihintale area.

Unique Traditions: The event is marked by mass pilgrimages, especially to Mihintale, where pilgrims climb the 1,840 steps to the summit. Another notable tradition is the erection of dansals, where people offer food and refreshments for free to pilgrims and the public, embodying the Buddhist principle of generosity. Devotees also wear white attire as a symbol of purity.

Other Notes: The festival has a strong focus on environmental protection, with authorities urging pilgrims to avoid plastic and polythene. Security measures are heightened in key pilgrimage areas. Some areas may prohibit the sale of meat and alcohol during the festival period.
