✈️ Why should you visit Sigiriya?

Minneriya is the only place on Earth where you can witness “The Gathering” of hundreds of wild Asian elephants around a single ancient reservoir.
  • World-Renowned Elephant Gathering – This park hosts one of the largest Asian elephant gatherings globally (often called “The Gathering”), where hundreds (up to 300–700 in peak dry season) of elephants congregate around the Minneriya Tank.
  • Dry Season Feeding Ground – Minneriya serves as a crucial dry season feeding area for a large elephant population migrating from the forests of nearby districts.
  • Historically Significant Reservoir – The park’s central feature, the Minneriya Tank, is a historically important reservoir built in the third century AD by King Mahasen, sustaining both wildlife and the surrounding ecosystem.
  • Important Bird Area (IBA) – Along with Kaudulla and Girithale, Minneriya forms one of Sri Lanka’s 70 Important Bird Areas, boasting a rich avian diversity of over 170 species.
  • Diverse Habitat Mosaic – The park encompasses a variety of habitats, including low-canopy montane forests, grasslands, scrublands, and wetlands, supporting a wide array of flora and fauna beyond elephants.

Guidelines

Use a Licensed Safari Operator: Always choose a registered and experienced jeep driver or guide. They know the park rules, animal behavior, and how to conduct a responsible safari without harming the ecosystem. Stay Inside the Vehicle: Never get out of the safari jeep during the tour, even if animals seem far away. It’s dangerous and prohibited in most parts of the park for safety and conservation reasons.
