✈️ Why should you visit Sigiriya?

Nagadeepa is the only place in Sri Lanka where you can visit a sacred Buddhist site on a remote northern island, marking the spot where the Buddha famously mediated a war between two Naga kings.
  • Site of Buddha’s Mediation: This is the sacred location where the Gautama Buddha, during his second visit to Sri Lanka, intervened to resolve a dispute between two Naga kings, Chulodara and Mahodara, over a gem-studded throne.
  • Ancient Naga Connection: The island, also known as Nagadeepa, has historical links to the Naga people, an ancient community who once inhabited the coastal regions and were associated with serpent worship.
  • Resilience Amidst Conflict: Despite being affected by ethnic strife and the civil war, including attacks and destruction, the temple has been rebuilt and has become a symbol of resilience and inter-communal harmony.
  • Haven During Expulsion: During the 1990 expulsion of Muslims by the LTTE, the temple provided refuge to Muslim residents of Nainativu, with the chief incumbent ensuring their safety and fostering a tradition of interfaith harmony.
  • Pilgrimage Destination via Causeway and Ferry: Reaching the temple involves a unique journey through causeways connecting islands and a short ferry ride, offering pilgrims a distinct experience of the Jaffna landscape.
  • Religious Significance: It is among the country’s sixteen holiest Buddhist shrines (Solosmasthana)
