- Cremation Ground Monastery: The monastery is said to be built on a cremation ground. The name “Alahana Pirivena” reflects this. It is a large monastic complex from the reign of King Parakramabahu I.
- Vast Terraced Complex: The monastery is laid out in terraces. It covers an area of more than 80 hectares. The complex features rocky outcrops, streams, and ponds.
- Chapter House for Monks: The site includes the Baddhasima Pasada. This was a monumental brick building. It served as the chapter house where monks met to recite their rules.
- Unique Moonstone: The complex has a unique rectangular moonstone at an entrance. It is different from the typical semi-circular ones found elsewhere. It features a row of swans and a lotus.
- Home to a Massive Image House: The complex contains the Lankathilake Image House. This is the largest example of “gedige” architecture. It once housed a gigantic 41-foot-tall standing Buddha image.
