✈️ Why should you visit Sigiriya?

Anawilundawa Bird Sanctuary is a Ramsar wetland and a haven for birdwatchers, notable for its unique confluence of coastal, mangrove, and freshwater ecosystems.
  • A Designated RAMSAR Wetland: This is a designated RAMSAR wetland. It is a wetland of international importance. In fact, only six such sites exist in Sri Lanka.
  • Collision of Three Ecosystems: The sanctuary has a unique setting. Three distinct ecosystems meet there. Therefore, it creates a special habitat for wildlife.
  • Ancient Man-Made Tank System: The sanctuary is an ancient system. It has six large man-made tanks. They were built in the 12th century.
  • Important Refuge for Wildlife: It is a vital refuge for wildlife. It supports 40% of the country’s vertebrates. Also, many migratory birds feed and breed here.
  • Home to Endangered Species: The sanctuary helps conserve rare species. This includes a few threatened fish and mammals. As a result, it is home to animals like the fishing cat.
