Attanagalla Rajamaha Viharaya – A beautiful serene sanctuary of spiritual heritage

✈️ Why should you visit Sigiriya?

  1. Historic Buddhist Significance:
Attanagalla is the only ancient temple in Sri Lanka historically recognized as the place where a Bodhisattva (King Sri Sangabo) fulfilled his Dana Paramita by sacrificing his life to help a poor man.
  2. Royal Connection:
It is closely associated with King Sri Sangabo, considered the most pious Buddhist king in Sri Lankan history, and his brother King Gotabhaya, who constructed a Stupa at the site to honor the king’s selfless act.
  3. Archaeological Heritage:
The temple houses Sri Lanka’s only intact Vatadage, a unique architectural structure that has been modified over time but remains well-preserved.
  4. Monastic Contributions:
During King Upatissa’s reign, a monk attained enlightenment at this site, prompting the king to build a five-story monastery, later offered to the Maha Sangha.
  5. Mythical and Historical Legends:
The temple’s lore is enriched by the story of King Sirisangabo’s self-sacrifice, a significant event detailed in the Mahawansa, and the continued preservation of related landmarks like the pond where he lived.
