Basawakkulama Wewa, also known as Abhaya Wewa, is an ancient, historically significant reservoir in Anuradhapura, considered one of the oldest in Sri Lanka.
  • Earliest Recorded Tank in Sri Lanka: Basawakkulama Wewa is the first reservoir mentioned in Sri Lanka’s recorded history (Mahavamsa). It was initially established by Prince Anuradha near his settlement, which became Anuradhapura.
  • Foundation of a Great Irrigation System: The reservoir, originally named Abhaya Vapi (or Abhaya Wewa) by King Pandukabhaya
  • 2,500 Years of Continuous Service: Despite being built roughly 2,500 years ago, the tank continues to supply water to the modern city of Anuradhapura, serving as a powerful testament to the advanced engineering skills of ancient Sri Lankans.
  • Symbol of Ancient Urban Planning: King Pandukabhaya enlarged the original tank to provide a reliable water supply for his enlarged capital city of Anuradhapura, demonstrating a thoughtful design to maximize efficiency based on the catchment area.
  • Renamed to Honor a Ruler: The tank was named “Abhaya Vapi” by King Pandukabhaya in memory of his uncle, Abhaya, who governed the country before him. It is presently known as Basawakkulama Wewa.
