✈️ Why should you visit Sigiriya?

Dakkhina Stupa is a significant 2nd-century BC brick stupa in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, believed to mark the cremation site of the ancient hero-king, Dutugamunu.
  • Mistaken Identity and Correction: For centuries, this stupa was mistakenly believed to be the tomb of King Elara, an invader from India. In the 20th century, archaeologists identified it as Dakkhina Stupa.
  • Possible Cremation Site: It is believed that this site is the cremation ground of the great King Dutugemunu. He defeated King Elara in battle.
  • Fourth Largest Stupa: Dakkhina Stupa ranks as the fourth largest of the six great stupas in Anuradhapura. It has a circumference of about 564 feet.
  • The Tissa-Maha-Cetiya: A slab inscription found at the site identified its ancient name as the “Tissa-Maha-Cetiya.”
  • A Rumor for Preservation: A local legend claims the stupa was called “Elara’s Tomb” to stop people from disrespecting it. This rumor successfully protected the site.
