Dematamal Viharaya is an ancient Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka, believed to be the hiding place of Prince Saddhatissa after a battle with his brother, Prince Dutugamunu.
  • A Sanctuary for Prince Saddhatissa: The temple is famous in Sri Lankan folklore. Prince Saddhatissa hid there from his brother. This happened during a battle for the throne.
  • Legends of Its Name: The temple has unique name legends. “Dematamal” may mean “I saw the brother.” Another legend says it means “enough farming, brother.”
  • Historic Location: The temple is central to a famous historical riddle. A chief monk gave a riddling answer to King Dutugemunu. This protected the hiding prince.
  • An Ancient Archaeological Site: It is an ancient archaeological site. The stupa dates to the 2nd century BC. Furthermore, it reflects traditional Sinhalese architecture.
  • A Picturesque Setting: The temple has a unique and serene setting. It is located in the middle of a paddy field. This makes for a beautiful view.
