Devil’s Staircase – Beautiful mountain forest environment

✈️ Why should you visit Sigiriya?

The “Devil’s Staircase” is a famously challenging and scenic trekking and 4×4 trail in Sri Lanka’s central highlands, known for its steep, zigzagging path and breathtaking views.
  • A Challenging and Dangerous Trail: The Devil’s Staircase is a 14-kilometer hiking trail known for being one of the most difficult and dangerous in Sri Lanka. It features a steep ascent with many sharp, zigzag turns, making it suitable for experienced hikers.
  • The Last of the Primeval Forests: The trail is highly valued as it passes through some of the last remaining tropical forests on the island. These forests were largely cleared for coffee and tea plantations in the 19th century, making this hike a rare opportunity to see this type of pristine environment.
  • Home to Sri Lanka’s Tallest Waterfall: A major highlight of the hike is the Bambarakanda Falls, the country’s tallest waterfall at 863 feet. The trail passes by the stream that feeds the falls, offering a spectacular view, especially at sunrise.
  • Versatile Route: The trail can be started from either Ohiya or Kalupahana. It is also accessible by a 4-wheel-drive vehicle, though hiking is recommended to fully appreciate the scenery. The hike typically takes about three hours.
  • A Reward for the Brave: Despite its difficulty, the hike is described as one of the most rewarding in the country. It offers breathtaking views of the southern valleys and northern mountains, along with unique features like a natural pool and the historic “V Cut” channel..
