Dimbulagala is a prominent rock formation and ancient Buddhist monastery in Sri Lanka’s Polonnaruwa District, known for its historical significance and natural beauty.
  • A Place of Many Names: The rock has many names. Its name “Gunner’s Quoin” comes from the British colonial era. In fact, ancient Pali texts called it “Dhumarakkha Pabbata,” or “smoke-demon.”

  • A Continuous Buddhist Sanctuary: This site is a sacred place. It has been a continuous shelter for Buddhist monks since the 3rd century BC.
  • A Center for Theravada Buddhism: The Dimbulagala monastery was very important. Therefore, in the 12th and 13th centuries, it was the most significant monastery outside the capital.
