Dunhinda Falls is a stunning waterfall in Sri Lanka’s Badulla district, renowned for its misty spray, resembling a bridal veil, which gives the fall its name.
  • Its Name Means “Mist”: The name means “mist” or “smoke.” It comes from the smoky spray at its base. In fact, its shape also resembles a bridal veil.
  • Legend of a Great Flood: There is a unique flood legend. A giant fern once blocked the falls. As a result, it flooded the entire town of Badulla.
  • Myths of Treasure and Ghosts: The falls are steeped in folklore. A legend says a king’s treasure lies below. Also, a ghost of a princess haunts the area.
  • Two Waterfalls in One Hike: You can see two waterfalls here. A smaller fall, Kuda Dunhinda, is along the path. Thus, it offers a great view before the main one.
  • The First Waterfall with an Entry Fee: This was the first fall to charge a fee. A small fee is charged for all visitors. Therefore, it holds a unique place in local tourism history.
