Dutch Museum – Beautiful old things inside a building

✈️ Why should you visit Sigiriya?

The Colombo Dutch Museum showcases the history and legacy of Dutch colonial rule in Sri Lanka through a collection of artifacts, furniture, and exhibits housed within a beautifully preserved 17th-century building.
  • A Building with Many Lives: The museum is located in a 17th-century building that has been used for many purposes. It was a governor’s residence, a training college, a military hospital, a post office, and more.
  • Dedicated to a Colonial Legacy: The Colombo Dutch Museum is the only museum in the world specifically dedicated to commemorating the Dutch colonial period in Sri Lanka.
  • Survived Demolition: The building was abandoned in 1971 after a wall collapsed. It was scheduled for demolition. However, public protests and a restoration committee saved it.
  • Showcases Dutch Townhouse Architecture: The structure is an excellent example of colonial Dutch townhouse architecture. It features a colonnaded gallery and high-ceilinged rooms designed for ventilation.
  • Displays a Unique Courtyard Garden: The museum’s courtyard, known as “Meda Midula,” is the oldest in Colombo. It features a solitary cinnamon tree, the spice that attracted the Dutch to the island.
