Hummanaya Blow Hole – The wonder of a beautiful seascape

✈️ Why should you visit Sigiriya?

Hummanaya is Sri Lanka’s only known blowhole, a natural rock formation that powerfully spouts seawater up to 30 meters high.
  • Sri Lanka’s Only Known Blowhole: Hummanaya is the only blowhole in Sri Lanka and is considered the second-largest in the world. Its name comes from the “hoo” sound it makes when active.
  • Geological Marvel: The blowhole is a natural phenomenon where seawater rushes through a submerged cavern and is forcefully pushed upward, creating a powerful jet of water. The height and timing of the sprays depend on the tides and wave formations.
  • Impressive Water Spouts: The water fountain can shoot up to a height of 25 to 30 meters (82 to 98 feet), with some reports of it reaching as high as 120 feet.
  • Best Time to Visit: The most dramatic water spouts occur during the southwest monsoon season, from May to September. It’s recommended to visit in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and larger crowds.
  • Local Significance: The blowhole is an important part of the local community’s culture and daily life, serving as a point of reference for fishermen. It has been a local marvel for centuries before gaining popularity as a tourist attraction.

Guidelines

Maintain a Safe Distance from the Blow Hole : The water can shoot up 25–30 meters with great force. Standing too close is dangerous due to slippery rocks and sudden sprays. Beware of Slippery Surfaces : The surrounding rocks and pathways get wet from sea spray. Wear shoes with good grip and move carefully. Avoid Visiting During Rough Seas : In stormy or monsoon conditions, the blowhole becomes unpredictable and risky. Always check local advice before going. Protect Cameras and Belongings : Saltwater spray can damage electronics. Keep phones and cameras in waterproof covers.
