Jethawanaramaya – A stunning beautiful stupa

✈️ Why should you visit Sigiriya?

The Jethawanaramaya holds the title of the largest brick structure ever built in the ancient world, representing an engineering marvel that was once the third-tallest man-made monument on Earth.
  1. Architectural Significance: The Palimage in the Jethawanarama monastery complex is a vaulted image house (gedige), a unique architectural style later emulated in Polonnaruwa structures like the Thuparama and Lankatilaka image houses.
  2. Historical Importance: Located west of the iconic Jethawanarama stupa, this structure reflects the advanced architectural and artistic heritage of ancient Anuradhapura, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
  3. Striking Features: The image house is distinguished by its eight-meter-high solid stone door side-posts, leading to a twenty-five-chambered stone reliquary (yantragala) and the lotus pedestal designed for a Buddha image.
  4. Cultural Continuity: The Palimage serves as a precursor to the continuation of similar vaulted-style constructions in the medieval city of Polonnaruwa, showcasing the evolution of Buddhist monastic architecture in Sri Lanka.

Guidelines

1.You must remove your shoes and hats before entering the stupa’s terrace and surrounding sacred areas. Since the stone floors can become extremely hot in the sun, many visitors recommend wearing socks to protect your feet from burns 2.Never take photos or selfies with your back facing a Buddha statue or a shrine, as this is considered deeply offensive. Always stand to the side or capture the monument itself without posing in front of it. 3.Foreign visitors must purchase a “Sacred City” entrance ticket (approximately $30 USD), which covers Jethawanaramaya and several other major ruins in Anuradhapura. Keep this ticket handy, as it may be checked multiple times.
