✈️ Why should you visit Sigiriya?

Kandy Lake is a beautiful, artificial lake at the heart of the city, located right next to the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic.
  • Historic Man-Made Lake: Kandy Lake is an artificial lake. King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, the last king of Kandy, built it in 1807.
  • Architectural “Cloud Wall”: The lake is surrounded by a unique parapet wall known as “Walakulu Bamma,” or “Cloud Wall.” The wall has triangular holes that once held oil lamps.
  • Historic Royal Island: There is a small island in the center of the lake called “Diyathilaka Mandapaya.” It was once a summer house for the queen’s harem.
  • Cultural Hub: The lake is a central point for the city’s cultural life. The annual Kandy Esala Perahera procession passes by the lake.
  • Tranquil Urban Oasis: The lake provides a peaceful escape from the city. It offers a shady path for walking and a chance to see various bird species.
