- Ancient Reservoir at its Center: The park is centered around the historic Kaudulla Tank. This tank was built by King Mahasen and attracts a wide range of animals.
- Elephants’ “Gathering” Point: The park is a key part of the “elephant corridor,” connecting three other national parks. In the dry season, large herds of elephants congregate around the Kaudulla tank for food and water.
- Important Bird Area: It has been identified as an “Important Bird Area.” The park is home to 160 species of birds, including many large water birds like the Spot-billed Pelican.
- Unique Landscape: Approximately two-thirds of the park’s area is under water for a significant part of the year. The landscape also features a mix of grasslands and scrubby forests.
- High Biodiversity: Kaudulla supports a wide variety of wildlife. The park is home to 24 mammal species, 25 reptile species, and 26 fish species.
