Kudumbigala Sanctuary – Unveiling beautiful Buddhist Heritage

✈️ Why should you visit Sigiriya?

Kudumbigala Sanctuary is a serene, ancient forest hermitage in Sri Lanka’s southeast, famous for its over 200 rock caves once inhabited by Buddhist monks and its unique cylindrical stupa atop a rocky outcrop.
  • Sri Lanka’s First Buddhist Sanctuary: This site is regarded as the very first sanctuary built for Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka. The monastery complex dates back as far as 246 BC.
  • Home to a Unique Stupa: The sanctuary features the country’s only cylindrical stupa. This monument stands atop the main Kudumbigala rock.
  • Extensive Ancient Cave Dwellings: The complex is sprawled across a rocky outcrop and contains over 200 ancient rock-cut caves. Therefore, these caves once served as dwellings for meditating monks.
  • Over 6000 Acres of Wilderness: The sanctuary covers 6,000 acres of rocky terrain and dense jungle. As a result, it is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers.
  • Relatively Recently Rediscovered: The monastery was not public knowledge until the early 1950s. A man moved to the area, leading to its rediscovery.
