Lowamahapaya – A beautiful monastic building

✈️ Why should you visit Sigiriya?

Lowamahapaya, also known as the Brazen Palace, is a historic site in Sri Lanka’s ancient city of Anuradhapura, famous for the 1,600 stone pillars that are all that remain of a once nine-story monastic structure.
  • The Brazen Palace: Lovamahapaya is also called the “Brazen Palace” or “Lohaprasadaya.” This is because its roof was covered in bronze tiles.
  • Nine-Storied Monastic Structure: Originally, this building had nine stories. King Dutugemunu built it during the 2nd century BCE.
  • Forest of Stone Pillars: The site features 1,600 stone pillars. These pillars once supported the colossal structure. Most of these pillars still stand today.
  • Architectural and Symbolic Grandeur: Historical texts claim the building was adorned with precious stones and a golden throne. It had one thousand rooms.
  • Center for Monastic Life: The complex included a refectory, chapter house, and assembly hall for monks. It was the central hub for the Maha Vihara monastic order.
