Mayura Piriwena is an ancient Buddhist monastery in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, with a rich history dating back to the 4th century AD.
  • Ancient Monastic College: Mayura Pirivena was an early learning center in Anuradhapura. It belonged to the Maha Vihara Aramic Complex.
  • Home of a Famous Monk: The renowned Indian monk Buddhaghosha Thero lived here during his time in Sri Lanka.
  • Royal Patronage: The monastery was founded by King Buddhadasa in the 4th century CE. It was later renovated by other kings, including Dhatusena and Mahanaga.
  • Architectural Remnants: The ruins feature massive stone pillars with capitals. The moonstone at the entrance is a notable feature, with a half-lotus flower design.
  • Early Archaeological Site: The site was one of the first in Anuradhapura to be formally excavated by archaeologists in the late 19th century.
