Meeyan Ella – A Hidden And Beautiful Waterfall

✈️ Why should you visit Sigiriya?

Meeyan Ella is a waterfall with a deep history located near the Ihalakotte railway station in Sri Lanka, which was altered to build a railway line during the British colonial period.
  • Historical Transformation: Meeyan Ella was originally a single mighty waterfall, later split into two streams (with a 50-meter separation) by British engineers during the construction of the Kandy railway line (late 19th century), to manage flooding and erosion on the track.
  • Scenic and Accessible Location: Located near Ihala Kotte Railway Station on the Kandy-Colombo railway line, Meeyan Ella is surrounded by lush greenery and historical sites, such as the Sangaraja Lena cave and Tunnel 5A.
  • Unique Railway Connection: The nearby Tunnel 5A, a 400-meter-long engineering marvel near Ihalakotte Station, is the third-longest railway tunnel in Sri Lanka.
  • Hidden Natural Beauty: This seasonal ~30-meter-high waterfall provides a tranquil environment for hikers, with overgrown trails leading to hidden caves and breathtaking views, making it a hidden gem for adventure seekers.
