✈️ Why should you visit Sigiriya?

Menik Vehera is an ancient Buddhist monastery complex in Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka, and is believed to be the oldest stupa in the area, featuring a unique small stupa built on an unusually high platform.
  • One of the oldest monastic structures/stupas in Polonnaruwa: Dating to the late Anuradhapura or early Polonnaruwa period (c. 8th–10th century CE)
  • Unique Platform Structure: The small stupa is built on an unusually high brick platform. This platform has a unique design. Stone steps lead visitors to the top.
  • Hidden Gem: Unlike more popular sites, Manik Vehera is a lesser-known and quieter location. It offers a more peaceful and profound experience for visitors. The surrounding area is serene and filled with trees.
  • Intricate Stone Carvings: The site features a massive stone door frame. This frame is intricately carved with multiple layers of grooves. It shows the detailed artistry of the period.
  • Contains Two Image Houses: One (larger/closer to stupa) contains three standing Buddha images and one seated Buddha image. The other (smaller) has one rock-carved Buddha statue.
