✈️ Why should you visit Sigiriya?

Mihintale is a sacred mountain peak in Sri Lanka, revered as the birthplace of Buddhism on the island.
  • Birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka: Mihintale is the place where Buddhism began in Sri Lanka. It marks the historic meeting of the Buddhist monk Mahinda and King Devanampiyatissa. This event brought Buddhism to the island.
  • Ancient Hospital Complex: The ruins of what might be the world’s oldest hospital lie at the mountain’s base. The site includes a medical bath and a Buddha shrine. King Sena II built the present hospital.
  • Intricate Rock Inscriptions: This site has many Brahmi inscriptions. The Mihintale tablet is from the 10th century. It is the longest and most preserved inscription.
  • Sophisticated Water Management Systems: Mihintale features a network of ancient ponds. The Naga Pokuna, for instance, supplied water for both bathing and the alms hall. A system of stone channels and spouts carried the water.
  • Architectural Diversity in Stupas: The site has several stupas with unique features. Kantaka Cetiya, for example, is known for its four decorated frontispieces. The Maha Seya houses a sacred hair relic of the Buddha.
