Muthurajawela Wetlands is Sri Lanka’s largest saline coastal peat bog, known for its rich biodiversity and serving as a vital ecosystem for numerous species of flora and fauna.
  • “Swamp of Royal Treasure”: Its name has a special meaning. It translates to “Swamp of Royal Treasure.” Indeed, a legend says a king hid a pearl treasure here.
  • Largest Coastal Peat Bog: It is the largest saline coastal peat bog in Sri Lanka. This is a very specific type of ecosystem. Therefore, it is ecologically very important.
  • Unique Brackish Ecosystem: The wetlands are a transition zone. Fresh water mixes with seawater. As a result, it has a biologically diverse ecosystem.
  • Ancient Origins: The marsh has ancient origins. It is a 7,000-year-old marshland. The ecosystem is from around 5000 BC.
  • A Haven for Wildlife: It is a refuge for many birds. You can also spot water monitors and monkeys. It is a popular spot for bird watching.
