✈️ Why should you visit Sigiriya?

Narangala is a prominent mountain in Sri Lanka’s Uva Province, renowned among hikers for its challenging trails and breathtaking panoramic views from its summit.
  • Second Highest Peak in Uva Province: Narangala Mountain rises to over 1,500 meters (1,527 m), making it the second-highest mountain in the Uva Province, ranking just behind the Namunukula mountain range.
  • The “Golden Mountain” Nickname: The mountain is popularly known as the “Golden Mountain” (Thangamalai in Tamil) due to the brilliant golden-colored grass that blankets its slopes, especially stunning during sunrise and sunset.
  • Distinctive Rectangular Peak: Narangala is easily recognized by its sharp, rectangular-shaped peak and flat summit, which is described as an attractive sight from a distance. The shape is one of its most defining features.
  • 360-Degree Panoramic Viewpoint: The summit offers an unparalleled 360-degree vista. On a clear day, visitors can see the Haputale plateau, the Namunukula mountain range, the Randenigala reserve, and views stretching between the valleys of the Uma Oya, Badulu Oya, and Loggal Oya.
  • Historically and Culturally Significant Location: According to local folklore, the mountain is steeped in history, linked to King Valagamba’s escape from invaders (who supposedly hid nine pots of gold, giving it a potential name derivation, “NawaRanKala” or Nine Gold Pots) and used as a strategic fortress or meeting point by Kandyan chiefs.

Avoid visiting during rain or fog as visibility drops and paths become slippery. Local Guidance : Hire a local guide if you are new to the area. They know the safest routes and can assist in emergencies. Environmental Care : Respect nature. Do not litter, damage plants, or leave campfire remains. Help preserve the mountain’s natural beauty. Summit Safety : Strong winds and sharp edges at the top demand caution. Stay away from cliff edges and take photos from safe zones only
