Pabalu Vehera is an ancient Buddhist stupa in Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka, known for its unique design, numerous Buddha images, and the discovery of glass beads that gave it its name.
  • Unusual Name and Origin: The stupa is called “Pabalu Vehera,” which means “bead stupa.” This name comes from the discovery of many small glass beads during excavation. The original name is unknown.
  • Nine Image Houses: Pabalu Vehera is unique because it has nine image houses. This differs from the four image houses typically found at other stupas.
  • Unique Buddha Impressions: One of the image houses contains the “Sri Pathla,” which is an impression of the Buddha’s foot. This feature is not common in other stupas.
  • Architectural Deviation: This stupa stands out for its unusually shaped brick structure. It also has a stairway to reach the first level.
  • Historical Significance: It is believed that Queen Rupawathi, one of King Parakramabahu’s consorts, built the stupa. Although damaged, it holds great religious and historical value from the Polonnaruwa era.
