Sasseruwa Buddha Statue: Admire beautiful artistry and cultural significance.

✈️ Why should you visit Sigiriya?

The Sasseruwa Buddha Statue is a colossal, yet unfinished, ancient rock-carved Buddha statue in Sri Lanka, often considered the less-refined “twin” of the more famous Avukana Buddha.
  • A Sibling Statue with Unique Details: The Sasseruwa colossus is often compared to the Avukana Buddha. However, it is slightly shorter. The statue’s robe is carved to cling to the body, a key similarity.
  • Home to a Sacred Bodhi Sapling: The statue is part of the Reswehera monastery complex. This complex holds one of the first 32 saplings of the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree. King Devanampiyatissa planted this tree in 237 BCE.
  • Unfinished Appearance: The statue is known for its unfinished appearance. This adds to its historical intrigue. It gives a glimpse into the ancient sculpting process.
  • Unique Reclining Buddha Statue: The temple premises have a 39-foot reclining Buddha statue. Visitors can walk completely around it. The statue’s plaster was applied over a real cotton robe, which is still visible.
  • Ancient Caves for Meditation: The monastery complex has nearly 100 ancient caves. In the past, monks used these for quiet meditation. Some of them are still in use today.
