✈️ Why should you visit Sigiriya?

Sithulpawwa is an ancient Buddhist monastery and meditation site located within the Yala National Park, known for its significant historical and religious importance.
  • Sanctuary for Arahants: Sithulpawwa was once home to thousands of monks, including 12,000 enlightened Arahants. The name “Sithulpawwa” means “the hill of the quiet mind.” Therefore, it was a primary center for meditation and spiritual learning.
  • Deep in the Wilderness: The monastery is located inside Yala National Park. You might see elephants and other wildlife on your way to the temple. This creates a unique blend of spiritual and natural experiences.
  • Ancient Rock Carvings: The temple features ancient rock-cut statues and cave temples. There are Boddhisatva statues chiseled from rock. Also, ancient paintings from the 3rd century BC exist there.
  • Historic Monastic Complex: The site, built by King Kavantissa in the 2nd century BC, contains a large number of stupas and cave temples. These structures show how a big number of monks lived there.
  • Symbol of Ruhuna’s History: The temple is a key edifice of the ancient Ruhuna Kingdom. It highlights the important place of Buddhism in Sri Lankan history.
