Surathali Ella: Admire beautiful cascades and tranquil surroundings

✈️ Why should you visit Sigiriya?

Surathali Ella is a 60-meter-tall waterfall located in the Ratnapura District of Sri Lanka, known for its unique tiered structure and association with a local film.

  • Name from a Film: The waterfall is named after a film shot in the area. This has made it a popular spot, especially among locals.
  • Folklore of Queen Sita: According to local folklore, there are soil crystals near the falls that resemble a traditional sweetmeat. It is believed that Queen Sita from the Ramayana epic made and spilled the sweetmeat here.
  • Tiered Structure and “Water-Slip” Nature: Instead of a pure vertical drop, the 60-meter-tall waterfall is composed of three segments. It is described as more of a “water-slip” as it flows over an angled rock.
  • Easy Accessibility from Main Road: Surathali Falls is one of the few waterfalls that can be easily accessed from a main road. The upper part is visible from the Colombo-Badulla main road.
  • Untouched Wildlife Sanctuary: The waterfall is bordered by a largely untouched wildlife sanctuary, contributing to its pristine natural beauty and making it a haven for nature lovers.

Guidelines

Swimming & Water Safety : If swimming is allowed, do so with caution. Water currents can be strong, and there are hidden rocks. Wildlife & Environment : Do not disturb wildlife, pick plants, or litter. Carry all trash back to protect the natural environment. Weather Awareness : Avoid visiting during heavy rain or monsoon season, as trails can become dangerous and waterfalls may swell suddenly.
