- National Votive Basilica Status:The Basilica was built following a vow made by Archbishop Jean-Marie Masson during WWII. The vow sought the protection of Ceylon from major conflict (and was fulfilled after the island was spared from bombing/air raids).
- Incorporation of Asian Architecture: Its design, by Fr. Heras, deliberately integrates Asian architectural elements. This includes a stupa-inspired frame and features that echo Hindu gopuram designs.
- Principal National Patroness: The church is the national shrine for Our Lady of Lanka. Pope Pius XII designated her as the principal Roman Catholic patroness of the entire island in 1948.
- Historical Century Artifacts: The church houses several rare artifacts. These include a historical ivory cross from Puttalam (likely 19th century or earlier) and a statue made of olivewood.
- Feast Day on Independence Day: Its feast day is celebrated on February 4th. This date coincides directly with Sri Lanka’s annual Independence Day celebration.
