Thanthirimale is an ancient Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka’s Anuradhapura District, renowned for its historic rock carvings, tranquil atmosphere, and a sacred Bodhi tree believed to be a descendant of the original Sri Maha Bodhi.

  • The Sacred Bodhi Tree Legend: This is a sacred site. A sapling of the holy Bodhi tree sprouted here. Some believe it was the first Bodhi tree in Sri Lanka.
  • A History of Re-discovery: The site was lost for many years. It was only found again in the 19th century. In fact, monks reestablished the temple in the 1960s.
  • Rock-Carved Temple and Statues: The temple is located in a rocky area. It features two large stone statues. Also, there are several ancient stone ponds.
  • Temple from the 3rd Century BC: The temple dates back a long time. It was built in the 3rd century BC. Therefore, it has great historical value.
  • On-Site Archaeological Museum: The site has its own museum. It is an archaeological museum. This helps visitors learn about the history of the area.
