- The temple has an inscription written in Sanskrit, dating back to the reign of king Aggabodi VI
- The inscription mentions two merchants, Trapussaka and Vallika, who are believed to have offered food to the Buddha immediately after his enlightenment.
- According to the Pujavaliya, a 13th-century Sinhalese religious work, the two merchants came to Thiriyaya and enshrined the hair relics of Buddha there.
