Udawattakele Forest Reserve is a historic “Forbidden Forest” and vital bio-reserve known for its rich avifauna and dense, tropical vegetation nestled on a hill ridge overlooking the city of Kandy.

  • Historic Royal Forest Status: Known as the “Royal Forest Park of Kandy” or “Uda Wasala Watta,” the sanctuary was historically a reserved pleasure garden for the Kandyan kings. It was even known as a “Forbidden Forest” (Thahanci Kele) to the public.
  • Rich Avifauna Habitat: The sanctuary is highly famous for its extensive and diverse birdlife. It is a haven for birdwatchers, with endemic species like Layard’s parakeet and the yellow-fronted barbet frequently spotted.
  • Historic Monastic Site: The forest is of significant religious importance, containing three Buddhist meditation hermitages (Forest Hermitage, Senanayakaramaya, and Tapovanaya) and three rock shelter dwellings for monks, including the Senkandagala-lena.
  • Lush Tropical Biodiversity: Despite being completely surrounded by the city of Kandy, the 104-hectare reserve is a repository of varied flora and fauna, including giant lianas and several endemic plant species. Many small and medium-sized mammals also inhabit the area.
  • Scenic Laced Trails and Views: The sanctuary features numerous named trails, such as Lady Horton’s Drive, providing tranquil walks through the lush environment. The trails offer spectacular views of the city below and the nearby Kandy Lake.
