Victoria Dam – Discovering the Beautiful Engineering Marvel and Scenic Views

✈️ Why should you visit Sigiriya?

The Victoria Dam in Sri Lanka is an arch dam primarily used for hydroelectric power generation and irrigation, and it is the tallest dam in the country.
  • Tallest Dam in Sri Lanka: Victoria Dam stands as the tallest dam in the country. It is a key part of the Mahaweli Development Project. It helps with both irrigation and power generation.
  • Double Curvature Arch Dam: The dam was built as a double curvature arch dam. This specific design won an award for “Innovative Design in Civil Engineering.” The dam’s gates only require power to close, which is a unique feature.
  • Generates Significant Hydroelectric Power: The dam supports Sri Lanka’s largest hydroelectric power station. Its three turbines generate up to 780 GWh of electrical energy yearly. This contributes significantly to the national power grid.
  • Submerged “Ghost Town”: Victoria Dam created the Victoria Reservoir. The reservoir submerged the old town of Teldeniya. The remains of the town sometimes reappear during very dry periods.
  • Funded and Designed by the UK: The UK provided the funding, design, and technical expertise for the project. Its construction was a major event, with Margaret Thatcher opening the dam. Even Queen Elizabeth II visited the site.
