- Tallest Dam in Sri Lanka: Victoria Dam stands as the tallest dam in the country. It is a key part of the Mahaweli Development Project. It helps with both irrigation and power generation.
- Double Curvature Arch Dam: The dam was built as a double curvature arch dam. This specific design won an award for “Innovative Design in Civil Engineering.” The dam’s gates only require power to close, which is a unique feature.
- Generates Significant Hydroelectric Power: The dam supports Sri Lanka’s largest hydroelectric power station. Its three turbines generate up to 780 GWh of electrical energy yearly. This contributes significantly to the national power grid.
- Submerged “Ghost Town”: Victoria Dam created the Victoria Reservoir. The reservoir submerged the old town of Teldeniya. The remains of the town sometimes reappear during very dry periods.
- Funded and Designed by the UK: The UK provided the funding, design, and technical expertise for the project. Its construction was a major event, with Margaret Thatcher opening the dam. Even Queen Elizabeth II visited the site.
