The “War Memorial Scandal Corner” in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka, is a World War I and II cenotaph formerly known as “Scandal Corner,” which was renamed “Memorial Corner” after the monument was unveiled.
  • Historical Significance: The War Memorial at Nuwara Eliya honors soldiers who died in both World Wars, with the first plaque commemorating 17 veterans from World War I (1914-1918) and the second plaque honoring 3 veterans from World War II (1939-1945).
  • Location: The memorial is situated inside Victoria Park, near a roundabout where Udupussallawa Road, Kandy Road, and Badulla Road converge, opposite the Grand Hotel.
  • Design and Construction: Designed by Mr. R.A. Powell, the cenotaph is made of large granite blocks, and the brass plaques were crafted by Messrs. Hoare & Company in England.
  • Unveiling and Renaming: The cenotaph was unveiled on November 11, 1922, by Colonel Clifford Coffin V.C., and the area around the memorial, originally known as Scandal Corner, was later renamed Memorial Corner in its honor.
