Vessagiriya – A beautiful Ancient Buddhist Legacy

✈️ Why should you visit Sigiriya?

Vessagiriya is an ancient Buddhist forest monastery and archaeological site in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, known for its rock shelters and historical significance as a dwelling for monks.
  • Ancient Forest Monastery: Vessagiriya is an ancient Buddhist forest monastery, part of the Anuradhapura ruins, that provided rock shelters for monks since the 3rd century BC.
  • Original Name Controversy: Historically known as Isurumuniya, the site was later named Vessagiriya by historians to distinguish it from another site already named Isurumuniya, despite inscriptions proving Vessagiriya was the original “Issarasamanarama.”
  • Ashta Pala Bodhi Site: This monastery is one of the significant locations where an Ashta Pala Bodhi, one of the first eight saplings from the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree, was planted by King Devanampiyatissa.
  • Unique Pabbata Vihara Architecture: Vessagiriya exemplifies the rare Pabbata Vihara architectural style, characterized by buildings arranged on different levels around natural rock formations, including a mysterious circular structure where 70 rare coins were found.
  • Historic Murals and Artistic Link: The site contains fragmented ancient murals, considered among the oldest in Sri Lanka, which some scholars believe may have been created by the same artist or school as the famous Sigiriya frescoes.

Guidelines

Respect the Ancient Ruins: Vessagiriya is an ancient monastic complex dating back to the Anuradhapura period. Do not climb on or touch the ruins or carvings, as they are fragile and culturally sacred. Wear Appropriate Footwear: The site involves walking over uneven rocks and paths. Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes as the rock surfaces can be hot and slippery. Bring Water and Sun Protection: There is little to no shade in the area. Carry drinking water, a hat, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun, especially between 10 AM and 3 PM. Dress Modestly: As Vessagiriya is a religious and historical site, wear modest clothing (avoid shorts or sleeveless tops) out of respect for Buddhist cultural norms.
