Duruthu Perahera Kelaniya – A Beautiful Majestic Celebration of Buddhism

The Duruthu Perahera in Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, is a grand procession held annually, celebrating the Duruthu Full Moon Poya Day. It features colorful displays of traditional music, dance, and religious rituals, drawing devotees and spectators alike to witness the vibrant cultural heritage and spiritual fervor of Sri Lanka.

Significance: Commemorates the Buddha's first visit to Sri Lanka in the month of Duruthu (January). It marks the beginning of the country's Buddhist calendar and showcases Sri Lanka's rich cultural heritage.

Key Activities: The festival includes a series of sermons and a week-long chanting ceremony (pirith). The main event is the procession (perahera), which features drummers, dancers, fire dancers, and elaborately decorated elephants. The procession has three stages: a small-scale Udamaluwa Perahera on the first night, a more elaborate Pahatha Maluwa Perahera on the second, and the grand Randoli Perahera on the final night.

Participants: Thousands of performers, including traditional dancers, drummers, acrobats, and elephants. Attendees include a large number of local devotees and foreign tourists.

Estimated Attendance: The event attracts hundreds of thousands of people.

Unique Traditions: The procession is led by whip-crackers, and fire dancers perform with hundreds of flaming stringed fireballs. A majestic tusker elephant carries the sacred casket containing the Buddha's relics. The event also includes processions for the devalas (shrines) of the gods Vishnu, Kataragama, and Vibhishana.

Other Notes: It is the country's grandest "low-country" pageant and has a historical link to the Buddha's visit to settle a dispute between two Naga kings. The event was first inaugurated in 1927.
