Significance: A religious and cultural festival held annually in Kandy, Sri Lanka. It pays homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha and is believed to bring blessings for a good harvest and rain. It's a fusion of an ancient ritual to invoke blessings from gods and the procession of the Tooth Relic.

Key Activities: Kap Situveema: The ceremonial planting of a sanctified jackfruit tree to begin the festival. Kumbal Perahera: The first five nights of processions, smaller in scale. Randoli Perahera: The grand, final five nights of the procession, with the largest number of elephants, dancers, and drummers. Diya Kepeema: A water-cutting ceremony held at the Mahaweli River to conclude the event.

Participants: Hundreds of traditional Kandyan dancers, drummers, musicians, and flag bearers. Whip-crackers, fire dancers, and acrobats. More than 100 caparisoned elephants and tuskers. The "Maligawa Tusker" is the main elephant that carries the sacred casket. Buddhist monks from the Malwatte and Asgiriya chapters. The Diyawadana Nilame (Chief Lay Head of the Temple of the Tooth).

Unique Traditions: The Sacred Tooth Relic is carried in a golden casket on the back of the "Maligawa Tusker" (the lead elephant). The procession is led by whip-crackers who clear the path, followed by flag bearers. The parade includes five separate processions from the Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth) and four Hindu shrines dedicated to the guardian deities Natha, Vishnu, Kataragama, and the goddess Pattini.

Other Notes: The Sacred City of Kandy, which includes the Temple of the Tooth, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The festival's date is determined by a new moon in July or August. The Perahera features a vibrant display of traditional costumes, music, and dance that showcases Sri Lankan heritage.
