Pada Yatra – A Beautiful Journey of Devotion and Reflection

Pada Yathra in Sri Lanka is a revered foot pilgrimage to Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak), a sacred mountain in the central highlands. Thousands of devotees embark on this journey annually, ascending the mountain to pay homage to the footprint believed by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and Christians to be of divine origin, fostering unity and spiritual reflection.

Significance: Sri Lanka's oldest pilgrimage tradition. A spiritual journey that is a test of faith and endurance. Honors Skanda-Kumara, the revered guardian deity. Symbolizes peace, coexistence, and devotion.

Key Activities: A foot pilgrimage (Pada Yatra means "journey by foot"). Pilgrims walk and camp outdoors, stopping at traditional places of worship. Devotees sing devotional songs, poems, and hymns. Ritual begging ("pindapada") for sustenance and to bless donors. The journey culminates with the annual Kataragama Esala festival.

Participants: Originally undertaken by Hindu devotees. Now a multi-religious pilgrimage with participation from Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, and Christians. Includes saffron-robed sadhus, local villagers, and pilgrims from overseas.

The journey passes through national parks like Yala and Kumana. Chants of "Haro Hara!" (meaning "may God protect us") are used.

Other Notes: The pilgrimage route is physically demanding, traversing jungles and arid land. The route through national parks is only accessible for pilgrims for a limited time each year.
